Hip joint replacement is a common orthopaedic surgical procedure. Thanks to advancing developments in hip replacement surgery, this operation has become an accepted method of treating severe hip pain relating to arthritis.

Orthosports specialises in orthopaedic surgery with qualified orthopaedic surgeons that offer diagnosis, surgical and non-surgical treatments and rehabilitation support.

People who suffer from hip arthritis usually endure one or more of following symptoms: walking difficulties, hip joint stiffness, and pain in and around the thigh, back, knee and, more commonly, the groin area. Walking difficulties can result in limping, which is the body’s natural response to minimise the stress placed on the affected hip joint.

Osteoarthritis is a form of degenerative arthritis which results in destruction of the joint and is a common cause of hip arthritis. Other contributing factors include avascular necrosis, otherwise known as osteonecrosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Medically known as arthroplasty, hip replacement surgery is commonly performed by an Orthopaedic surgeon when the hip joint is worn down by osteoarthritis. During the operation, these worn out joint linings and other areas affected by arthritis around the hip are removed and replaced with a prosthetic hip joint.

The ball and socket of the affected hip joint is removed. Excess cartilage and bone is then removed around the socket part within the pelvis (acetabulum), and is replaced with an artificial socket, permitting free movement at the new joint.

After the operation, a successful hip replacement surgery will reduce the painful discomfort felt in the hip joint caused by the arthritis and improve the movement and function of the hip area.

Orthosports provides professional attention to all patients affected with musculoskeletal disease or injury and oversees their rehabilitation as part of its quality of care.
